New Cairo is a planned city in Cairo Governorate, east of the Ring Road between the Cairo–Suez and Cairo–Ain Sokhna desert roads. It was built as a residential, commercial and educational area rather than a historic district, which is why so much of it is apartment buildings, compounds, business addresses and campuses rather than hotels.

That matters for where you sleep. For guests staying more than a few nights, travelling with family, or needing their own kitchen and laundry, a furnished apartment can be a practical alternative to a hotel room — which covers a lot of the reasons people come to New Cairo: visiting family, a university term, a work assignment, a relocation while you look for somewhere permanent.

Fifth Settlement, التجمع الخامس, is one of New Cairo's main residential areas and is where most guests picture when they say New Cairo. It is part of the same city, not a separate destination.

The American University in Cairo's New Cairo campus is on AUC Avenue, and it brings a steady stream of people who need somewhere to stay for longer than a hotel night — parents visiting for a term or a graduation, families settling a student in, visiting academics, and people here for a conference or a short teaching block.

A serviced apartment tends to suit those stays better than a hotel: the visit is usually measured in weeks, often involves more than two people, and usually includes wanting to cook.
